Former Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, are expected to face new charges accusing them of authorizing the torture of Americans held in Venezuelan prisons, U.S. officials told Reuters, the Washington Examiner reported; the charges are expected Thursday, when Flores appears in Manhattan federal court at a 10:30 a.m. ET hearing to ask U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein to release her for health reasons. Prosecutors oppose bail, writing that Flores would pose an “extreme risk of flight and danger to the public,” the AP reported via the New York Post; the couple have pleaded not guilty to drug-trafficking and weapons charges and face trial in June.
